The January 2025 Transfer Window: Major Moves in European Football

The January 2025 transfer window has officially closed, and it was another exciting period filled with high-profile moves, strategic reinforcements, and surprising deals. With clubs across Europe looking to strengthen their squads for the second half of the season, some big names were on the move, while others remained despite intense speculation. Let’s take a closer look at the most notable transfers.

Manchester City was the most dominant team in this market this January, something they usually wouldn't have done in recent years. However, due to a horrible start and ambition to win this season, they spent over £180 million, more than the combined 19 teams in the first-division English league.

Star players include:

  • Nico Gonzales from Porto for 60 Million
  • Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt for 70 million
  • Vitor Reis from Palmeiras for 35 million
  • Abdukodir Khasanov from Lens for 40 million

The city's aggressive approach reflects its urgent need to reinforce its squad, which aims to compete in the English First Division and Champions League.

Not every team had a good transfer window. Arsenal was hit with key injuries to key attackers Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka and was expected to bring in a new forward. However, despite links to Ollie Watkins and Mathys Tel, the Gunners failed to secure a deal. Mikel Arteta, their manager, expressed his disappointment but placed trust in Kai Havertz to lead the line. However, this missed opportunity could prove costly in Arsenal’s push for silverware, particularly in their battle for the English first-division title and Champions League campaign.

Other parts of Europe also spend some money. French Giants Paris Saint-Germain secured the signature of Georgian winger Khivicha Kvaratskhelia from Napoli, an Italian team, for a whopping 59.1 million euros. They hope the Georgian winger will add firepower to PSG’s attack as they continue their pursuit of winning the French league and Champions League glory.

However, my favorite transfer this window has to be AC Milan, which signed young Mexican star Santiago Gimenez from Netherlands team Feyenoord for 32 million euros. As a Mexican, it makes me happy to see someone from my country play in one of the biggest football leagues and with one of the biggest clubs. At Feyenoord, he scored 65 goals in 105 games, and everyone hopes he will continue his form in Italy.

AC Milan will also face Feyenoord in the Champions League knockout playoffs, so Gimenez will have to score against his previous team if he wishes to advance to the Champions League Knockout Stage. And I genuinely can not wait to see it happen!

  1. I know it may be surprising, but I really like your blog! I have to say that City has great financial opportunities, however the transfer window has not helped them overcome the dark period they are going to. I hope the manager does not leave the club after the season because of the results the team is currently having, because it is normal to go through a moment in which things just don't go your way.

As for Milan signing Gimenez, I saw he provided the assist for the winning goal in his first game after coming in as a sub, which is a great start for the player. However, I cannot believe Milan lost against Feyenoord today...Fortunately the result was 1-0, which means the Italian club still can come back in the second game and advance to the next round.
